Moving to Dubai With Kids: Schools Don't Follow Your Postcode

If you’re moving to Dubai — or you’re thinking about it — and you have kids, I want you to forget everything you know about how school works.

Because where you live in Dubai has almost nothing to do with where your kids go to school.

And that changes everything.

Back in the US — and Canada is similar — your kids go to the government school that’s assigned to your postcode. And here’s the thing nobody talks about: not all those schools are equal. Some are great. Some are genuinely bad. But they’re all free. So what do parents do? They buy a house in the district with the good school. Prices go up. The postcode becomes the product.

Dubai doesn’t work like that.

Almost every expat child here goes to a private school. And private schools in Dubai — you choose them. You apply to them. You pick the curriculum that suits your family. And here’s the part that surprises most people: your school does not need to be in your neighborhood.

I’ve seen kids in this city commute 30 minutes each way, every single day. Some longer. Not because their parents couldn’t afford somewhere closer — but because they found the right school, and they didn’t compromise.

Dubai has over 200 private schools running across multiple curricula — British, American, IB, Indian CBSE, French, German. KHDA rates every single one. Outstanding. Good. Acceptable. You have transparent data to make real decisions.

And none of that is tied to where you live.

Look — I tell every family the same thing: run both searches in parallel. Shortlist your schools first. Map them. Then look at neighborhoods within reasonable reach. Some areas work beautifully for multiple school corridors. Arabian Ranches. Jumeirah. Mirdif — which honestly gets overlooked by families who don’t know better.

The mistake I see families make? Choosing a home first, then realising their preferred school has a two-year waiting list or requires a 45-minute drive in morning traffic.

Dubai does not penalise you for your postcode. But that freedom only helps if you actually use it.
